Household Waste
According to section 75(5) of Enviromental Protection Act, 1990, "household waste" means waste from:
- domestic property, that is to say, a building or self-contained part of a building which is used wholly for the purposes of living accommodation;
- a caravan which usually and for the time being is situated on a caravan site;
- a residential home;
- premises forming part of a university or school or other educational establishment;
- premises forming part of a hospital or nursing home.
Household waste includes waste from:
- "dustbin" household collections;
- street sweepings;
- litter, bulky and hazardous household wastes;
- parks and gardens;
- civic amenity sites and wastes separately collected for recycling or composting through recycling banks or kerbside schemes.

As per section 3 of Controlled Waste Regulations, 1992, waste of the following descriptions are not treated as household waste
- any mineral or synthetic oil or grease;
- asbestos;
- clinical waste; and
- scrap metal
